Thoughts of an anonymous poster

This has got to be the quote of the day. I received this comment chastising me for going back to school to learn a new career and qualifying and receiving PELL grants to do it. He says:

"Federal tuition assistance is welfare."

You can read his post and decide for yourself HERE. Should I do the right thing and quit school?

This is an interesting question. I can see both sides. You do have career skills that would normally keep you employable, but there is a slow job market currently. This neatly coincides with your career burnout. What to do, what to do?

I personally received some government grants, as well as academic scholarships, when I attended school from ages 20-21. I was married with a dependent child and my husband only made $30K working two jobs. I graduated debt-free and began paying taxes on an annual income of around $50K (plus my husband’s income). Before college, I made $7/hr, so the government was getting a good return on their investment in the form of income taxes paid.

I would not beat yourself up over the idea that you are taking money that “we” all put in. You contributed too, when you made 6 figures, and you will contribute again. If this was a few years back when you made 6 figures, and you decided you were bored and intentionally tanked your business to show less income to be aid-eligible, well, that would cause me to have a low opinion of you. I don’t think that’s the case from reading your blog, though.

That said, there may be better options for you. The patient care techs where I volunteered got insurance benefits, 3-12 hr shifts per week, tuition reimbursement, and a flexible schedule to work around classes. Seems like a better deal than what the government has to offer you.
